River Fishing - Frequently asked questions
What times of year are best to fish in the river?
The time for river fishing on Vancouver Island is late August to Early April. At any point between these dates there are fish to catch in the rivers. Below I will list what is good and at what time and what techniques are available.
Late August
Fresh in Summer Steelhead are at their peak. Good Fly opportunities are available, as well the river is open to bait fishing. The summer Steelheads are very quick to move though this river, as most are of hatchery origin. As a general Rule the upper part of the river is better for flies and the lower river is better for gear.
Early September
The river closes to bait fishing to protect Chinook Salmon. Steelhead fly fishing is at it's peak for this river until the 15th of September. Summer Steelhead peak right at this time but the arrival of the salmon bring on a steelhead Slow time. The river is full of Steelhead but the low water and rush of Coho and Chinooks put these fish into no bite mode.
Mid to Late September
Coho are entering the lower river at a rate of up to 5000 a day. These are ocean bright fish and are moving 2 feet a second. This is the start of the best fishing for Coho on the Stamp Somass. We are the earliest river on the coast to get Cohoes. The Chinooks start to enter the river at the same time but tend to take their time getting to their destination. The Chinook abundance has been rebuilding and we anticipate retention of Jack Chinook and possibly adult as well. The Coho limits are two per day.
October - Flyfishing
The middle of October brings the end to Stamp river Salmon fishery but it is the beginning of the Nitinat Coho fishery. The Nitinat River has some of the largest Coho on Vancouver Island returning to it. It not uncommon to catch several fish over 15 lbs. in one day. Every season we catch Coho in the 20lb class - VIDEO CLIP. Also in October many of small west coast stream are just getting there water and the summer Steelhead are getting very active as well the lower portions of all the smaller streams are just getting there bright Coho and chums in. It is my opinion that October is best time for the Fly fisherman on Vancouver island - VIDEO CLIP The smaller streams offer a unique nature experience that myself and many of our angling friends look forward to every year.

November
Early November is a great time for the large Coho of the Nitinat and Peak of the coastal Chum salmon. November 1 is also the beginning of the drift-fishing season for the stamp river Summer runs. The stamp/Somass opens to bait on November I. The seasonal salmon area closures are also lifted at this time. The summer runs which are now all in this area are feeding heavy on the deposited eggs from the fall Chinook and Coho. This area is only open for bait for 1 month and the fishing is generally some best steelhead action for the whole fall. The water levels are generally high during this time and this brings a continuous flow of natural eggs to the Steelheads. As a general rule the higher the water level the better the fishing. River Salmon fishing generally ends on or about the 12th of November.

Summer river Steelhead oppurtunities are still available in the upper river, but bait is not allowed in this area until the following November. The lower river remains open for bait until the whole winter season.. The winter Steelhead start to show up as early as the first of December. The Stamp/Somass is the first river on Vancouver Isalnd to get winter run Steelhead. The runs start to really get going around the 18th of December.

January, February, March
These months like December are the best time to catch both wild and hatchery winter run Steelhead. The techniques for winter Steelhead is primarily drift fishing. The winter fish don't move like the summer fish (colder & higher water) Catching one fish on a fly would be considered a good day. The average catch on the Stamp/Somass for guided trips is about 7 hook-ups per boat per day. We have 20 fish days and 2 fish days and it averages out around 7 fish. On an average year we catch about 700 Steelhead. We have had two years where we were over 1200 fish. These are actual caught fish not hooked fish.
This time of year is also great for winter Chinooks in Barkley Sound. These fish are 6 to 15 pounds can yield continuous action during this time of the year. The prawn fishing is at its peak and guides put out the traps every trip. This is a great way to your ocean fix during the winter months.

How many people can go in the boat ?
The guides will take one or two persons per boat. The boats are built with two seats for the guests and adding a third makes it uncomfortable for everyone. In 2001 we will make no exceptions to this rule. The price for the boat is $350.00 or $ 175.00 per person based on double occupancy. The 7% GST is also applicable.

How long is the trip and what time do we start in the morning?
Trips are booked by the day. The average stay is two fishing days. Your guide will pick you up at the lodge at 7:30 AM. We drive to another property that we own where we keep the boats. The upper property has a large back eddy on it and the boats are always save from rising and falling water. We are not permitted to start the jet motors before 8:00 AM. We make sure that are hooks sharp and baited for the 8:00 AM start. We fish until 3:00 PM and are back at the lodge by 3:20.

What kind of boats to do you use for river fishing?
We use a variety of boats to suit the needs of the guests and the river conditions that we are faced with.
- 3 Alumaweld Jet boats that are 16 to 18 feet powered with Yamaha Jet outboard engines. These boats are our primary guide platform for the Stamp/Somass.
- 5 drift boats for low water fall conditions and low water winter conditions.
-3 pontoon boats for the smaller creeks and rivers and primarily use these when we are flyfishing.
-1 Whitewater raft for the hard to navigate sections of the Gold River
What can we expect to see for wildlife?
During the fall season is the peak of the wildlife encounters for this region. We see Black Bears and eagles on a daily occurrence . The bears and the eagles migrate to the salmon Rivers to feed on the weak and dying Salmon. During September only a few of the bears are at the river as most are still feeding on the berries in the mountains. By October the bears are all visiting there favorite river spots at least once day. The Nitinat has a very large bear population and upwards of 10 bears a day are often spotted. The lower sections of the coastal streams have the largest bear populations and it is not uncommon to see 15 bears in a outing. These bears are the best to watch, as these rivers have no signs of human contamination. It not uncommon to see these bears catch and eat the fish from the river. Combined with a fishing trip this can be a great Husband and Wife experience which the memories will last a lifetime. During the winter months the bears are not around and only a few eagles have stayed for the winter. The Canada geese make an appearance for a brief magical moment every morning.

How should we dress?
Steelhead fishing in the winter can be described as either cold or wet. A good winter rain Jacket is a must. The morning is usually much cooler than the rest of the day so a good idea is to layer your clothing. Many guests where waders for warmth and dryness but good rain pants serve the same purpose and for safety reasons are a better idea. A good hat that will keep the rain off the back of your neck and a hooded garment that you can pull up on you head to keep you ears and neck warm when we are running up river. Good thick soled food ware to keep your feet warm. The floor of the boat is the same temperature as the water and it is very easy to cold from the feet up.

What do we need to bring for Equipment?
We have all the necessary equipment for fishing. We have drift rods, Spinning rods and fly rods. The guides bring all the necessary equipment for fishing on your day. We use Shimano(www.shimano.com) drift gear and Sage fly gear. We encourage guests to bring their own Rods if they are suited for the type of fishing during your day. Many guests have brought center pin reels and found them to be a little tuff in the boat. I am not saying don't bring them but make sure you are well practiced up on your casting skills. If you are bringing you own gear make sure that your reels are fully spooled with at least 12 pound test. Rods that are at 10 to 12 feet in length are best suited for float fishing from the boat.
For Flyfishing in the fall the best weight of rod is a number 8. Rods that are 9 to 12 feet are best suited for this type of fishing. Most of the flyfishing is with a sink tip swinging it down and across. The lines that I have with me when I go fishing are 1) WF 8 floating line. I cut 14 feet cut off the front part of the line and attach a loop. The loop allows me to attach sink tips or the 14 feet of line that I originally cut off. 2) Cortland 325 grain cut back to 12 feet 3) Cortland 425 grain cut back to 12 feet. 4) WF 8 Mastery clear tip line for shallow tailouts.
